Learning from a Potential Disaster
|
A common mistake almost costs a chiropractor dearly, providing a moment of inspiration.
Spring of 2003: A Problem Identified...
During a visit to his local chiropractor, Vigilant Data Protection founder Charles Epp was asked to determine if their tape backup system was working. During his anlysis, Charles determined that:
- The tape software was not configured correctly to backup critical files
- Only one set of tapes were being used
- Two tapes out of seven were defective
- The tape drive was obsolete and difficult to replace is necessary
- There was no installation CD of the backup software available
- Backups were not verified
- Backup tapes, even when properly used, were kept on site next to the computer
The Chiropractor had a false sense of security.
Their main PC often held up to thirty days of open billing for insurance and medicare with up to $100,000 of exposure or more.
There were multiple points of failure - and failure could cost them weeks of work if the transactions could be re-created, his practice if they could not be recovered...
Charles quickly setup a way to make backups to CD-ROM, which solved the immediate need. However, several potential failure points were identified:
- Backups still were dependent upon someone remembering to run it
- Changing the files to backup required a skilled operator
- An operator was required to wait until the CD burning process was complete before they could close the office
- Someone had to remember to take the CDs offsite
- Limited scheduling flexibility
Fall of 2003: A Solution Found
Based upon over 20 years of experience with corporate IT systems, Charles knew there had to be a better way to protect small and medium-sized
businesses. He searched and found several potential solutions. After several months of testing and investigation, Charles determined that all but all one had serious limitations.
He selected back technology from Remote Backup Systems and and tested with several clients over the course of six months before he launched Vigilant Data Protection.
Vigilant Data Protection was founded in October of 2003 with the mission of using the God given talents of it's employees to serve others.
